It is commonly believed that heartburn is caused by excessive acid in the stomach. It actually occurs when there is not enough of the right acid to digest food correctly.

The acid in question is Hydrochloric acid and when there is not enough to digest food properly the food starts to break down and produce organic acids which cause heartburn. This is the start of a cycle. Most people at this stage will take an over the counter antacid which neutralise the acid and HEY they feel better. Only for a while though. The action of the antacid leaves the stomach alkaline and more hydrochloric acid is then produced to finish the digestion process. Hope this is all making sense!

Anyway and now to the point of this tale. Cider vinegar is rich in an acid called Malic Acid, which increases the acidity of the stomach therefore aiding digestion.

The favourite way of taking Apple Cider vinegar for heartburn in our house is in this tasty Apple Cider Vinegar Cocktail first used by the health pioneer Paul Bragg. Here is his recipe.

1 heaped teaspoon of honey
2 teaspoons of Apple cider vinegar
glass of warm water

Simply mix the ingredients together and drink.
